Australian Standing Stones - Glen Innes

Located in the Centennial parklands, high on the hilltop overlooking the township of
Glen Innes

Replica Crofters cottage

Comprising of 40 granite monoliths, the Standing stones have a circle of 24 stones
representing 24 hours of the day, three central stones, four cardinal stones
marking true North, East, South & West, & seven stones marking summer & winter solstices, the longest & shortest days of the year

They are probably the first of their kind built anywhere in the world for
3500 years
& may be unique in the southern hemisphere

Each stone had to stand 3.7metres from ground level,
which meant each had to be 5.5metres in total length

The stones averaged 17 tonnes

Giants seat!!

The Stones are home to the annual Australian Celtic festival
held on the first weekend in May

To rise at dawn &  listen to the eerie skirl of pipes in the autumn mists
at the Standing Stones is an experience
not to be missed
